I congratulate California for receiving an impressive 4-star rating from MADD when the nation has only received 2.9 stars. Drunk driving is an ongoing battle in every state, and it is imperative that we continue to work with MADD to keep roads safe for everyone.
I had the honor to work with MADD this past year on a very important piece of legislation, AB 183. This bill will reduce the number of minors obtaining alcohol from supermarkets through self-checkout stands. It is illegal to buy cigarettes, spray paint and prescription drugs through self-checkout stands, and alcohol should be no exception. It is because of MADD's contribution that AB 183 was signed by the Governor, and that California has received such a high rating.
However, there's still work to be done. In 2009, 950 people were tragically killed due to drunk driving in California and another 27,000 were injured. While California has an impressive 4-star rating, we can do better. I look forward to continuing my work with MADD to help California achieve that perfect score.
