A picture of the mental state of James Holmes,  the 24-year old neuropsychology student who shot 70 defenseless theatre-goers, killing 12 of them, at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado.

Here are important facts that are now being revealed:

Holmes was under the counsel of a university-based psychiatrist for schizophrenia.

Holmes was a cannabis user (pot smoker)

Cannabis is strongly associated with schizophrenia, as is smoking tobacco.

Just after the shooting Holmes informed police he had taken a vicodin tablet and also identified himself as "The Joker."

Vicodin is the same drug that was found in the blood circulation of actor Heath Ledger when he died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in 2008.  Ledger played The Joker in a previous Batman film The Dark Knight.

Vicodin is a combination of codeine and acetaminophen (aka Tylenol).  Side effects include drowsiness, mental clouding, lethargy, impairment of mental and physical performance, anxiety, fear, dysphoria, psychic dependence and mood changes.  Who prescribed or was the source of the Vicodin Mr. Holmes consumed has not been disclosed.
